Riverbed Services Platform (RSP)
The Riverbed Services Platform (RSP) allows the Steelhead platform to deliver additional services used in the branch office.
RSP is a protected environment resident on a Steelhead appliance where additional services and software can be hosted. Customers can install different modules and services in RSP according to their needs. To do so, the customer would purchase the specially-integrated and tested software package directly from the 3rd-party software vendor and install it on the Steelhead platform. Riverbed and the 3rd-party software vendor will jointly support the Steelhead and its hosted RSP software package.
RSP allows customers to leverage the Steelhead appliance to reduce their hardware footprint in remote offices. Riverbed customers are free to choose the 3rd-party software vendor of their choice for selected services; each software module is protected from other RSP software instances. Similarly, the Steelhead’s core functionality including Data Streamlining, Transport Streamlining, and Application Streamlining, are also protected and will not be adversely impacted by failure or any other event in the RSP software package.
The underlying technology for RSP comes from VMware. VMware software products have been proven in millions of installations and implementations around the world, and Riverbed licenses the same underlying technology and software from VMWare to ensure that be sure that RSP provides robust enterprise-class capabilities. In contrast, Cisco WAAS’s competitive “Windows on WAAS” feature uses open-source KVM software; because KVM is free open-source software, ultimately no one is accountable for the long-term stability and viability of “Windows on WAAS.”
