Sun Software

Software products are a very important component of the Sun product portfolio. Recent significant announcements include the Sun Java System which includes the server software stack, the Java Enterprise System (JES), and a desktop piece - the Java Desktop System (JDS). When you identify any Sun software sales opportunities you should contact your Arrow ECS Account Manager to help you scope the opportunity and plug your company into the Sun software speciality programme.

Current queries relating to Sun Software are answered below. Further information can be found at: http://wwws.sun.com/software/

What's happened to the SunONE products?

Sun Java System is the new brand name for the original SunONE products, e.g. the SunONE Messaging Server is now the Sun Java System Messaging Server. All of the products can still be purchased separately as point products, and in addition, JES will bundle the previous SunONE and Sun Cluster products together for a fixed price.

Which products are in JES?

JES is Sun's software stack for servers (middleware) and includes Sun Cluster, Directory, Messaging, Calendar, Instant Messaging, Portal, Application and Identity Servers. Later releases will see more of the Sun products like Meta Directory added to JES.

JES is supported on which platforms?

Although several of the software products run on other platforms, JES itself is supported only on Sun hardware running Solaris (SPARC & x86) and Linux from Release 2 due in April '04.

When is JES released?

JES is released once a quarter. The first release was January 2004.

How much does JES cost?

The pricing for JES is $100 (as at March '04) per employee / per annum for 3 years. Government agencies have an agreement via the GCAT /OGC to purchase at £65 (as at March '04) for a combined JES and JDS (see below) license per user.

What are the advantages of JES?

JES consists of a set of integrated products so customers no longer have to face the complex task of making sure all this software works together in their business. Software releases are predictable and the licensing is simple as it's calculated on employee headcount. Also, support costs and a certain amount of consultancy and training are included in the JES price.

What is JDS?

Java Desktop System is a low cost alternative desktop solution to MS Windows. There is no Microsoft software installed, but rather it is based on open source components like Linux and Ximian Evolution which Sun then aggregates and packages.

What is Open Source?

This is code that is developed by the developer community at large, rather than by individual companies. It's currently receiving a lot of momentum in the marketplace, especially in the areas of Linux Operating System and Openoffice (office productivity).

What are the key features of JDS?

JDS is built with Suse Linux and includes StarOffice 7 - a fully featured alternative to MS Office, a web browser, email and instant messager client, and an easy-to-use interface via the GNOME desktop.

How much does JDS cost?

Normally priced at a $100 per desktop, it currently sells for $50 per copy (as at March '04).

In which categories do JES/JDS/SO belong?

JES and JDS are category N and StarOffice is category B.
