IBM announces the IBM XIV Storage System
The IBM XIV Storage System is turning storage on its head by employing a revolutionary architecture, designed to deliver performance, scalability, and ease of management while harnessing the capacity and cost benefits of inexpensive components like SATA drives. The IBM XIV Storage System is designed to provide customer’s information infrastructure with more reliability, versatility and availability, while offering improvements in storage management, provisioning and asset utilisation. - IBM XIV Storage System delivers consistent high performance without manual tuning - The IBM XIV Storage System is designed to deliver outstanding, consistent performance. Data is automatically distributed to best utilise system resources and optimise performance. Performance levels are also maintained automatically, without any IT staff intervention. The self-tuning capability ensures equilibrium is kept and performance is optimised even when hardware is added, changed or removed.
- IBM XIV Storage System offers instantaneous snapshots - The innovative XIV approach enables almost unlimited snapshot copies of data to be made in sub–second time with virtually no impact to system performance. Snapshots are created instantly and are immediately available for use as backup copies, or for testing, development, data mining and other uses. This can dramatically improving IT operations dependent upon copied volumes.
- IBM XIV Storage System offers thin provisioning - Provisioning storage systems can be time–consuming and error-prone due to the tedious, manual work tasks needed to manage it. By enabling the definition of a logical volume size which is larger than the volume’s physical size, the IBM XIV system, can automatically add physical capacity when it is needed, instead of wasting capacity in anticipation of growth. Physical capacity allocated to individual applications can increase without impacting the application when data growth occurs or wasting capacity that is not needed. Thin provisioning is designed to reduce costs and make system management easier, allowing simpler scaling of application volumes as data needs grow.
